In North Carolina littering is a huge problem. You many not think so but it is. Even throwing so small like a balled up gum wrapper out the window can create a big problem. Last year taxpayers spent almost $11 million on cleaning up litter. We could be using this money for a better cause like I don't know feeding the 1 in 4 children go hungry. In 2015 approximately 7.5 million pounds of roadside litter alone were found and picked up. That doesn't even count the litter found in lakes, ponds and forests. Animals will sometimes think that this litter is food and eat it causing them illness or even death. Something even things like a glass bottle can take up to a million years to fully disintegrate. Even littering things like banana peels or apple cores that will go back to the ground can be harmful. This can cause bugs to be attracted to these areas and could spread disease. Our state economy also suffers if there is litter on the streets. Tourism is important to our state and helps with our income, tourists that see litter in our streets may not be attracted to the area. I Think a good way to solve this issue would be taking care of our community and having pick up committees that will go out and help clean the streets. Please don't litter it will make our communities safer, healthier and will help use the costs of cleaning it to be put to a better cause.
